THE LITTLE ONES
by Dan McNay At the lake the house stood high against the clouds A strand of smoke from the chimney Snakes toward the evening storm A reply to the hiding setting sun You will be the dawn I will be the breakfast blaze After the storm is gone CHORUS The little ones come to places like this Like sparrows on the lawn They smile and smile and smile And fly away home Rain streaks the laced windows to drain away You can see our breathing glass Beneath the dark head of the storm And the snapping stings of lightning Our windows steam and sweat And laugh out loud At the dream the lake portrays The face of the water dances with tears Circles run out our memories Of long ago houses and other pain And other nights in the rain CHORUS TWICE ------------------------------ WHERE ARE YOU GOING? by Dan McNay You want to know why I balk at West Texas Sweating the oil rigs there in the summertime You ever been stranded on a wide shoulder At the edge of a little town And talked to the boys in their cars Who have come out from their cruising around Where are you going? You ever spend the night Rolled up in the wet grass below The highway that won’t let you out of its sight. You forget to think with the itch to go And you take a ride with an old man Who’s turning off in five short miles The beer he offered for breakfast Made you steam like the dew rising Before the warm West Texas sun Across the drying black top And the dust settling after he’s gone A wide river ran so cold below It was like ice in the sand and ice in your soul The water falling through your fingers Could be her cold hair in the shower The smooth sand her hip beneath the sheet But it hurt like hell to think of her now So you would wet your throbbing head And fill your canteen in your stranded mourning Where are you going? You ever spend the night And pretend a breeze might be The ghost that won’t let you out of its sight. Where are you going? You ever spend the night Rolled up in the wet grass below The highway that won’t let you out of its sight. | |
