Daydee
The one thing the music thing has taught me, is you have to be thick skinned and send out a 100 come-ons to get two gigs. So I'm sending out my come-ons about the novel I finished in January, "Daydee" a story of an aging hooker who gets her life together by going home after 25 years to a little farming town in Illinois. Some S/M, drugs, murderous villains, serious psychosis' throughout and a new born baby at the end. (C'est moi, as Flaubert said about Madame Bovary) Anyway, anybody got a connection, I could use it. Publishing is so much harder than music. I get to think that there is always some place else to play, and it's true for what I'm doing with the music. Tis regretfully not the case for literature, which I've really devoted most of my adult life to.
This all started because I played downtown LA
This all started because I played downtown LA at Crane's Bar as a SurgeEvent booked guy for no money. The sound guy there was the last guy I got at Bar 20. He was bad and had lousy equipment. I decided I could do better, and go direct with both venues. This was the exchange I got from Bar 20. It turns out that this guy: Troy Berry is "T Roy" that booked me with the SurgeEvent connection: Anyway - the exchange:

Hi,
I’ve played up there several times with the Surge guy. The last couple of times, I’ve gone over really well, the Surge guy keeps asking me on other gigs at other places. I’d like to offer to work directly with you for future gigs. I have a four piece band that sounds young and fresh, but we need to be paid. We are not real costly, about what you are paying now.
Performers interested in your venue:
We have a four piece band: banjo, fiddle, drums and guitar & mandolin, two singers.
We do covers and originals. We’re adult oriented musicians with a family friendly sound.
We are currently booked for every Saturday in July at Golf N’ Stuff in Norwalk. We have our own sound.

Hi Dan. Our Conditional Use Permit does not allow us to pay for performers but thanks for checking in.

You actually expect anyone to believe what you just replied?

Dan I'm actually stunned by your response. Are you aware that Bar 20 was never zoned/approved for live music when it got its liquor license?? I

I certainly don't have time to get into all the rules and nuances and intricacies of our Conditional Use Permit in this email but maybe you should give me a call so I can give you a much needed education on zoning laws in West Hollywood for bars that were never intended for live music instead of responding in such a manner.

So I should contact the Permit office and tell them you have live music? You are not paying your booking people? They are working for free? I'm a booking agent. I can book better acts in than you got and do better sound.
Jesus.

Dan. Call me now. I'm going to tell you what we are allowed to do (have up to 3 people) and what we are not (live bands with drums)
Once I explain it to you, you will go ahhhh I see. But I'd appreciate it if you call me now and we have a positive conversation instead of your current tone. We are both musicians and both on the same team brother

Troy,
It's not that hard to figure out. You are getting paid and I'm not. When you figure out how to get me paid, I'll come back and talk to you. I'm entertaining the folks that are buying drinks in your bar. I'm getting paid elsewhere. I guess I've just decided I don't need to do this level any more. It's like the open mics and the showcases I've done earlier. Either you outgrow them or you don't. Or you work up some scam shit or you don't. If I'm gonna play for free it will be at a non profit where nobody is making a paycheck or they are doing it for the love of it.
Thanks

You sent me an email about your 4 piece band playing at Bar 20.
Only duos and trios are allowed at Bar 20 per our CUP. That is the most the city will allow without a special event permit and proof of insurance.
We are working with the City on getting this changed and if/when this happens will keep you posted.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and take care

We are a very “hard ticket” room, meaning that if you don’t bring your own crowd, no one will be here.
We have basically no walk in traffic.

The Sound MF
So, I play this club downtown LA tonight. Supposed to play from 7:30 to 8:00, but I'm the first one on, so, I think I'll show up early - maybe get some extra time.So I find the place, snag a street parking space right out front. Check it out, the bar is in the basement. you enter through a bank vault door. The place looks like the pictures on the the web, although in reality its about half the size of the space shown in the photos. The sound guy I've met before up in Hollywood at another of this promoter's venues. He couldn't make my banjo preamp work there and "I" had to suggest he just give me a second mic, rather fuss with it for half my slot. This time, a 7:00 I set up, get myself in tune, and sit there. He shows up about 7:15 to do the sound check and after it 's set, he tells me I can't start until 7:30. He has no boom mic (it broke he says) The guy that's is playing after me loans me his. I start at 7:30 and there's no vocals to match my banjo, and about half way through the first song, he fixes it. I get off at my scheduled time. Tell him how wonderful the sound was. His boss and he are getting paid. I didn't get paid for this. I think I got to work harder to get my own bookings.

In all fairness-more Swap Meet awareness
This is the actual rules for the Vendors, which they have to sign. I was on the top of the hill. With medium sound amplified, my music would echo off the parking structure and everyone, everywhere could hear it. It really was like playing Carnegie Hall. I was interested in trying to record it at one point, but my recording guy's cost was over my budget. People would climb the hill, saying it took a while to realize where you were.

Hey Dan, sure gonna miss hearing you
One of my fans from the Swap Meet where I was fired after two years of playing there::
Hey Dan, sure gonna miss hearing you @ Hilltop(G.C.C.) WTF Happened? I Know you had to compete with that KNUCKLEHEADS radio blasting.Don't know if you remember me and Uncle Gary(first row, front of food truck)

What I had left out of the story was that ole Jon had rented a space out right next to me to a guy that refused to turn off his music while I was performing. The guy had been there once before quite a few months ago, and I had put up with it so as to not make waves and he didn't come back. One of the other vendors asked him to turn it off as well as me asking, but he refused. After I was fired, I went around and shook hands with my friends and thanked them for their support and then I walked around toward my car and drop kicked the asshole's boom box into purgatory. The owner actually waved me to come over. (he was maybe 5'2" -old and round. I'm 6'7" and healthy) When I did not, he yelled he was calling the police. I told him to go right ahead and got in my car and left

THE LITTLE ONES
by Dan McNay At the lake the house stood high against the clouds A strand of smoke from the chimney Snakes toward the evening storm A reply to the hiding setting sun You will be the dawn I will be the breakfast blaze After the storm is gone CHORUS The little ones come to places like this Like sparrows on the lawn They smile and smile and smile And fly away home Rain streaks the laced windows to drain away You can see our breathing glass Beneath the dark head of the storm And the snapping stings of lightning Our windows steam and sweat And laugh out loud At the dream the lake portrays The face of the water dances with tears Circles run out our memories Of long ago houses and other pain And other nights in the rain CHORUS TWICE ------------------------------ WHERE ARE YOU GOING? by Dan McNay You want to know why I balk at West Texas Sweating the oil rigs there in the summertime You ever been stranded on a wide shoulder At the edge of a little town And talked to the boys in their cars Who have come out from their cruising around Where are you going? You ever spend the night Rolled up in the wet grass below The highway that won’t let you out of its sight. You forget to think with the itch to go And you take a ride with an old man Who’s turning off in five short miles The beer he offered for breakfast Made you steam like the dew rising Before the warm West Texas sun Across the drying black top And the dust settling after he’s gone A wide river ran so cold below It was like ice in the sand and ice in your soul The water falling through your fingers Could be her cold hair in the shower The smooth sand her hip beneath the sheet But it hurt like hell to think of her now So you would wet your throbbing head And fill your canteen in your stranded mourning Where are you going? You ever spend the night And pretend a breeze might be The ghost that won’t let you out of its sight. Where are you going? You ever spend the night Rolled up in the wet grass below The highway that won’t let you out of its sight. | |
