We are now booking acoustic acts for February 13th. We are seeking talented artists to play 20 minute sets from 2pm to 8pm at a popular cafe in DTLA.

We are asking all artist contribute $25 towards the sound man, who will bring the PA and conduct proper sound for the venue during the nights event.
We will be also be running an half page ad in the Gallery Row Art Walk News mentioning all performers involved.
Also you will be given a $10 gift certificate good for anything you like in the cafe.
There is free parking... all ages welcome. This will be a monthly gig opportunity.

Forgotten Banjo Greats

Segal on Banjo

Segal is an accomplished banjo player; he played with a dixieland jazz band while in college at Columbia that had several different names. When he was the one who booked a gig, he would bill the group as "Bruno Lynch and his Imperial Jazzband". Recent engagements in Los Angeles have included guest spots with the award-winning residency Guitarology.
The group, which later settled on the name Red Onion Jazz Band, later played at his first wedding.^[6] In 1974 he played in A Touch of Ragtime, an album with his band, the Imperial Jazzband (which, other than its name, may or may not have had any relation to his college band). During the 1970s/80s, Segal made frequent television appearances with the "Beverly Hills Unlisted Jazz Band", whose members included actor Conrad Janis on trombone.

I included a link above where a CD version can be found. I had run across this vinyl album at a thrift store. There was only one banjo track on it. The rest was George playing the uke. He plays a 4 string banjo.

Other Come-ons

I had sent this just before our Christmas break. As I've not heard from her, I assume she's not interested- or she may be on vacation. Will probably get a response sometime in February. Could be a perfect place to play. There is absolutely no one around at 5-6pm on a Friday night.

Dear Ms. Jacobs,

I live near the Promenade in Westchester. I know that you have hosted music in your outdoor area occasionally. I'm interested in producing a weekly performance series in the spring once it warms up. I have sound equipment to accommodate a smallish venue performance and am interested in working with young Los Angeles talent. Most young talent would perform at no cost with the idea of selling cds and/or tshirts or just working for tips. I am willing to organize and provide sound for free. I'm also a performer and would be interested in performing myself as a small piece of the series. Your ability to advertise the events incorporated into your own media outreach would be a important boon. It might be advantageous to be able to store sound equipment on location there.

The series would open to all styles of music, but I'm inclined toward acoustic folk, jazz, mellow pop and smaller groups. One would screen for acceptability and ability and music that a large age range would find enjoyable.

I've done this kind of thing before in a couple of clubs and I was working with the Westchester First Fridays Food Truck event for a while in a similar capacity.

I'm 60, work for USC in the Marina as a Business Manager, married with grown children and own a house in Westchester.

The price of this could only be a win-win for everyone.

New Plan

Westchester First Fridays has taken me up on my offer to organize their music. So's I'm going to try it out. We will see if there is some reciprocity out there to be had. So far, very little, when I invited people I knew to come and split the bill with me before. But the thought is, maybe there's few souls out there that might want to collaborate.

Howl At The Moon - on Monday Night

The deal was supposed to be a Toy Drive. I was supposed to bring a draw- fans with me- to get toys donated. So, on a Monday night, the day before Christmas eve, my fans are supposed to go to Universal City Walk, pay 10-20 dollars for parking, bring a toy so they wouldn't have to pay a 15 dollar cover and buy a 10 dollar beer to watch me sing for a 30 minute set (which I was told when I signed on was going to be a 45 minute set.) Anyway, it was fun. My son went with me and did the video. We were looking for the place which was on the second level above the City Walk and he pulled it up on his phone to find it and the web site photo looked like it held three hundred people. I started to hyperventalate a bit. The bar could hold maybe a crowded 100 people. The act before me came to get my CD and said they loved me. T

This is a marvelous book!

Bird

It was passed from one bird to another,
