Well I've got a Korean Fusion group playing tonight, you want to sit in with them? Ah, no. I like to rehearse. And I'm a singer- that's why I get to play places. Oh, you sing? The logic of this endevour

Nobody likes it, for whatever reason. So, you show up, play your heart out, the crowd loves you, you get tips, you sell every CD you brought, people were laughing at your jokes.

And you don't get to come back. Why?

Or they've gotten better people?
Or they think you are too old? (As may be my case)
Or they are bored with what you do?
Or they want to mix it up?
Or they have a friend that wants the spot?

Or they can't be bothered?

Then you get booked by people that don't even know you or have listened to your music you sent them.

When the band broke up I made sure that folks that booked me again at the same places knew they were getting a solo act. Then I show up and they want to know where the band is.

I'm still trying to find out my place in the performance thing. I like doing outdoor in the sun.
I'm thinking maybe I'm too much for the folks that want mellow background music.
I don't have enough of a following to do the club thing regularly.
I'm working on my musical skills so I can solo and up tempo and play without a book in front of me
and play music people recognize.

There's nothing you can do to resolve this thing- and its all filled with insecurities and self doubt and wonderment at the process that you can't seem to help yourself from doing.

It's the food truck twenty something that brings you dinner after your set and tells you not to stop singing.

Its the MC that tells you that the song you wrote was the best dead baby song he had ever heard.

The Vendor next to you who gives you one of her prints cause she likes your music.

It's the park ranger that says she wanted to hear your voice through the trees.

Its apartment courtyard people at the pool and hanging out that applaud after a rehearsal with a buddy and a guy comes to ask you to play it again.

It's the twenty something girls in The Viper Room that told you they really liked you.

It's your musician friends that take to time to check out your stuff.

Been Neglecting this Blog -Sorry

I've been neglecting this poor old blog. Sorry. Here's what's going on in my life: The new book is published. Hoping to have a party in October to celebrate. I've gone to the printer with the CD because I keep selling out of my homemade ones. I'm playing Friday night in Atwater Village and Saturday at the Cerritos Farmers Market. I'm going to do a recital for my banjo teacher (!) I made friends and played a long weekend with the lady from Maryland and put up videos for her and my daughter and Nancy from the Tribal Cafe Gig. 

I've been working on a new video video for me with the footage from the Yosemite hike. It blew up the first time. I'm trying again. Editing together 64 five second spots is a bit problematic.

My copy editor for the book noticed my misuse of eminent instead of imminant

at the end of my ad blurb for the book. I thought of writing to my contact at the publisher, but they will no doubt charge me $200.00 to change it. Oh well.

First Fridays in Westchester has finally discarded me. A year and 1/2 is a pretty good run. I'm back at Melrose and Anaheim and picked up some new stuff.

I feel like a teenager, trying to pick out a solo in my studio.

Read the book - its really a lot of fun and good.  

 

 

Another hell of an evening- why didn't anybody tell me I could do this

Goofy night. Had a bug fly down my throat in the middle of a song. Kept screwing up. Something is happening here. I'm picking up tempo & speed. I'm telling jokes and stories, joking around with the audience. Sold more Cds- one cd at a time as they say.  They had a dog adoption thing going on and we kept introducing the dogs to the audience. One of the food truck guys brought me dinner and told me not to stop singing. Co-nnecting with the audience I guess. I love when people thank me. Jesus, little do they know. I taped the whole thing- videos to come- I'm interested to hear what I did with "In The Pines" I told them when I got to the Fakebook songs, that if they recognized these songs, it probably meant that they were a redneck. The venue there does NOT want cover songs- try singing three hours without a cover to your name.

Actually I do have three hours of original and public domain songs that fill the bill. 

Literary Dreams

Finished Ushant tonight. You know, Conrad Aiken, (wikipedia him) Started it backpacking in Yosemite in July. It is a really nice book, It was one of the ones I collected years ago when I was studying the prose of really good poets. Read Cummings, Thomas, Poe, etc. Had tried a couple times before on this one but never made it. The beginning is a bit dense. If you have read Lowery's "Under The Volcano" you will love this. It turns out Lowery studied with him. Anyway, a great poetic book of memories. Ah, the days of big dreams and learning form- when I was collecting these novels of poets I was writing one paragraph a night, searching for seamless prose.

There's a nice little fictional portrayal of me in Carolyn's book sitting at my desk before the window that looked out at Oakwood in Venice, writing my paragraph for hours. Not too much has changed except the inclusion of an hour on the banjo before my nightly typing.

"Under the Volcano" I read in New Orleans in my twenties. Really good book. Even better was a Lowery book I found in Monterey "October Ferry To Gabriola" the book he was working on when he died. Highly recommend that one.

Still writing- got about 70 pages into the 2nd draft of Daydee. Some of the first draft is here in the blog. I had to stop posting it because it was becoming a mess and I changed some the characters and some the plot halfway in.  "Daydee" is going to be the title I think.

Long Beach To Northridge

I have been asked several times about how we were going to leave the gig in Long Beach at 7:00 pm on a Friday night and play at 7:30 pm in Northridge on the same night. 50 miles on the 405 on a Friday night? In a half hour? The guy at Folkworks didn't put us on the their calendar because he didn't believe my explanation. We did both gigs. And Dar posted this photo up on her Facebook page the next day:

We took the short cut.

The assumption is that we were playing together. We were each doing 30 minute sets in Long Beach. I went first and left her there at 6:00 pm - drove to Northridge and started there and then she followed at 7:00 pm. We both had to sit on the 405 for an hour and a half, we just did it separately.

I'm a little crazy.

AFTON, LLC - More Craig's List Fantasy Land

I went to their Website through a recommendation on Facebook from a band I know. Their website had no banjo category, nor was I asked to provide any of my music. So he's not even heard me perform. So you are supposed to show up and hope you get to play

I've already seen this kind of set up on Craig's List. I don't sign on for anything where I don't have a set start time and a set play duration time. I also don't do pay to play which this is, even though you don't call it that. You also haven't heard what I sound like and your categories don't even include my instrument. Take me off your mailing list. And I'm already booked for 3 hours on the 29th. Why do I need your sweatshop?

SET LENGTH POLICY
Exending your set length is primarily dependant on your ability to draw. To be most fair, we can only give longer sets to the acts that draw out more fans. Our venues do not want us to devote 50% of the night to an act that is only drawing 2% of the crowd. I norma lly can give you a longer and longer set the more Tickets you get sold. If you want a longer set, remember that:
+ You must set that up with me directly ahead of time
+ I cannot get you a longer set if you draw poorly or don't get many Tickets sold

STANDARD SET LENGTH
The standard set for a full band is 30 minutes. As stated, if you want a longer set notify me asap. (The standard set for acoustic/solo openers is 20-25 minutes, though you can request longer). Of course, you can always play a shorter set if you prefer it just notify me ahead of time.
