I might have the 14. I’ll give you a second hold. Where are your shows on 10/11?

Let me know about the 14th.

Thanks

We are a very “hard ticket” room, meaning that if you don’t bring your own crowd, no one will be here.
We have basically no walk in traffic.

How sad.

The Sound MF

So, I play this club downtown LA tonight. Supposed to play from 7:30 to 8:00, but I'm the first one on, so, I think I'll show up early - maybe get some extra time.So I find the place, snag a street parking space right out front. Check it out, the bar is in the basement. you enter through a bank vault door. The place looks like the pictures on the the web, although in reality its about half the size of the space shown in the photos. The sound guy I've met before up in Hollywood at another of this promoter's venues. He couldn't make my banjo preamp work there and "I" had to suggest he just give me a second mic, rather fuss with it for half my slot. This time, a 7:00 I set up, get myself in tune, and sit there. He shows up about 7:15 to do the sound check and after it 's set, he tells me I can't start until 7:30. He has no boom mic (it broke he says) The guy that's is playing after me loans me his. I start at 7:30 and there's no vocals to match my banjo, and about half way through the first song, he fixes it. I get off at my scheduled time. Tell him how wonderful the sound was. His boss and he are getting paid. I didn't get paid for this. I think I got to work harder to get my own bookings.

In all fairness-more Swap Meet awareness

This is the actual rules for the Vendors, which they have to sign. I was on the top of the hill. With medium sound amplified, my music would echo off the parking structure and everyone, everywhere could hear it. It really was like playing Carnegie Hall. I was interested in trying to record it at one point, but my recording guy's cost was over my budget. People would climb the hill, saying it took a while to realize where you were.

Other: (restrictions) Loud music, sounds or noises are prohibited. Bicycles, skateboards, or roller skates are prohibited and violators are subject to citation and removal by Campus Police. The possession of a firearm, knife and/or weapon upon any school property is a FELONY and will result in arrest and criminal prosecution.

Hey Dan, sure gonna miss hearing you

One of my fans from the Swap Meet where I was fired after two years of playing there::

Hey Dan, sure gonna miss hearing you @ Hilltop(G.C.C.) WTF Happened? I Know you had to compete with that KNUCKLEHEADS radio blasting.Don't know if you remember me and Uncle Gary(first row, front of food truck)

What I had left out of the story was that ole Jon had rented a space out right next to me to a guy that refused to turn off his music while I was performing. The guy had been there once before quite a few months ago, and I had put up with it so as to not make waves and he didn't come back. One of the other vendors asked him to turn it off as well as me asking, but he refused. After I was fired, I went around and shook hands with my friends and thanked them for their support and then I walked around toward my car and drop kicked the asshole's boom box into purgatory. The owner actually waved me to come over. (he was maybe 5'2" -old and round. I'm 6'7" and healthy) When I did not, he yelled he was calling the police. I told him to go right ahead and got in my car and left

THE LITTLE ONES
by Dan McNay

At the lake the house stood high against the clouds
A strand of smoke from the chimney
Snakes toward the evening storm
A reply to the hiding setting sun
You will be the dawn
I will be the breakfast blaze
After the storm is gone

CHORUS
The little ones come to places like this
Like sparrows on the lawn
They smile and smile and smile
And fly away home

Rain streaks the laced windows to drain away
You can see our breathing glass
Beneath the dark head of the storm
And the snapping stings of lightning
Our windows steam and sweat
And laugh out loud
At the dream the lake portrays

The face of the water dances with tears
Circles run out our memories
Of long ago houses and other pain
And other nights in the rain

CHORUS TWICE
-------------------------------------
WHERE ARE YOU GOING?
by Dan McNay

You want to know why I balk at West Texas
Sweating the oil rigs there in the summertime
You ever been stranded on a wide shoulder
At the edge of a little town
And talked to the boys in their cars
Who have come out from their cruising around

Where are you going?
You ever spend the night
Rolled up in the wet grass below
The highway that won’t let you out of its sight.

You forget to think with the itch to go
And you take a ride with an old man
Who’s turning off in five short miles
The beer he offered for breakfast
Made you steam like the dew rising
Before the warm West Texas sun

Across the drying black top
And the dust settling after he’s gone
A wide river ran so cold below
It was like ice in the sand and ice in your soul

The water falling through your fingers
Could be her cold hair in the shower
The smooth sand her hip beneath the sheet
But it hurt like hell to think of her now
So you would wet your throbbing head
And fill your canteen in your stranded mourning

Where are you going?
You ever spend the night
And pretend a breeze might be
The ghost that won’t let you out of its sight.

Where are you going?
You ever spend the night
Rolled up in the wet grass below
The highway that won’t let you out of its sight.

Why They Write Books

This is why they make books. He's sitting in an open air market in Bulgaria in 1934 where the canopies cover much of the sky except a thin stripe of blue in the middle. This is the third volume of a record of an eighteen year old walking across Eastern Europe.
Time for another slivo and a couple of roast paprika-pods. A shadow appeared on the awnings further up the land, gliding across each rectangle of canvas towards my table, sinking in the sag, rising again at the edge, and moving on to the next with a flicker of dislocation, then gliding onwards. As it crossed the stripe of sunlight between two awnings, it threaded the crimson beak of a stork through the air, a few inches
above the gap; then came a long white neck, the swell of snowy breast feathers and the six-foot motionless span of its white wings and the tips of the black flight feathers upturned and separated as fingers in the lift of the air current. The white belly followed, tapering, and then, trailing behind, the fan of its tail and long parallel legs of crimson lacquer, the toes of each of them closed and streamlined, but the whole shape flattening, when the band of sunlight was crossed, into a two-dimensional shadow once more, enormously displayed across the rectangle of cloth, as distinct and nearly as immobile, so languid was its flight, as an emblematic bird on a sail; then sliding across it and along the nearly still corridor of air between the invisible eaves and the chimneys, dipping along the curl of the lane like a sigh of wonder, and, at last, a furlong away slowly pivoting, at a gradual tilt, out of sight. A bird of passage like the rest of us (p. 34). - From "The Broken Road" by Patrick Leigh Fermor.

I typed the first sentence into Google and found this:

If you are going to read them, you have to read all three

Getting Fired

Jon,

I've considered you my friend all this time, I've been playing your event for two years, since April 2014. I'm really disappointed that I have been dismissed. The haters have appeared. Last month, an old Irish man came all the way up the hill to ask me to stop singing and performing. I told him I would not. I assume this was one of the haters. I want you to be aware of of what I am doing as a performer. I was offered all four days at the Temecula County Fair this weekend and I turned today down, because of my loyalty to your Swap Meet. My band and I have been hired in July for 5 weeks at $400.00 each week for a two hour gig each Saturday. I've played the Riverside County Fair last month. and will be returning to the San Diego County Fair this year. I did 102 gigs last year and made sure or tried to make yours each month.
There has always been great support from your vendors. There were a couple near me that always applaud and make sure that I have made enough tips to make me want to return. The food truck guy and his wife have always made sure I had food and drink if I needed it. I've met great people out there. Got several private party gigs from your customers. I've always made $30 to $50 there each month, which means at least 30 people like what I do.
I love the acoustics there, I always have. I've had customers walk all the way up the hill to find me to give me a tip or compliment what I do.
I know you have a responsibility to your event and your bosses, but I would suggest, in the future, that instead of reacting to the haters that you take a vote. Each of your vendors have to pay you- have them cast a ballot to decide the fate of the performer. I think you will be surprised.

Anyway, I'm sorry to lose you as a friend. I'm sorry to lose the Swap Meet. If you ever manage to find anyone willing to perform out there again, I'd suggest you work harder to keep them. The venue can't support a band and the power is problematic. I'm afraid it's going to be somebody like me.

With regret,

Dan McNay
